322 Eighth Avenue Lobby & Elevators
Location: New York, NY
Area: 1,400 sq. ft.
After an elevator cab mechanical modernization plan was established, the building owner of this post-industrial office building decided to renovate the elevator lobby, vestibule, and elevator cabs. Spurred by the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks, new security measures were requested to be integrated into the lobby.
Located in the now trendy west Chelsea neighborhood, this building is surrounded with fast moving pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Local establishments have rapidly modernized with stylish designs. The competition of commanding higher rents is fierce, so this upgrade was essential.
Upon entry, three turnstiles were to be installed to funnel the traffic flow in and out of the building with minimal obstruction and maximum security. The security desk was to be custom designed with integrated security devices. The three existing elevators required mechanical conversions in order to speed the vertical traffic of the tenants.
Due to the existing narrow floor plan, the solution needed to accommodate the traffic flow. The position of the security desk and turnstiles were located to avoid traffic bottlenecks and to allow a safe egress. In order to integrate the narrow lobby and high ceilings, the desk and turnstiles were proportioned so that neither element over shadowed the other.
New energy efficient lighting highlights the existing restored post-industrial mural, intricate coffered ceiling and marble walls. The security desk and elevator cab finishes of marble, bronze metal, and textured bonded metal panels are attractive selections and impervious to wear and tear.
